Starting Zepbound: The Ultimate Do’s and Don’ts Guide

By Brenda | Unwind and Unweight 💜🌸

Starting Zepbound can bring excitement, questions, and a little “Okay…what happens now?”

Take a breath. You don’t have to figure everything out on day one.

Here at Unwind and Unweight, we make room for honest conversations about wellness, self-care, and the everyday choices that help us move forward. As someone sharing my own Zepbound journey, I know how much encouragement matters.

What works for me may not work for someone else. We can still support each other while building habits that fit our individual needs.

Here’s our starting point: Move with love. Eat with purpose. Give yourself grace.

This guide offers general education and encouragement, not personal medical advice. Follow your prescriber’s instructions and read the Medication Guide that comes with your prescription.

DO: Keep your healthcare team in the conversation

Before your first injection, make sure you understand how to use your particular pen or vial, store it, and follow your prescribed schedule. Ask your pharmacist to demonstrate anything that feels unclear.

Tell your prescriber about your medicines, supplements, medical history, and any upcoming procedures.

DON’T: Change your dose to keep up with somebody else.

Your friend’s prescription is not your instruction sheet! Follow your own treatment plan, and contact your prescriber before making changes. Zepbound should not be combined with other tirzepatide products or GLP-1 medicines.

DO: Make hydration part of your daily rhythm

Keep water within reach and take regular sips throughout the day. Try linking it to familiar moments: waking up, sitting down to work, or preparing a meal.

Ask your healthcare team what fluid goal fits you, especially if you have a condition that requires fluid limits.

DON’T: Ignore trouble keeping fluids down.

Vomiting and diarrhea can cause dehydration and kidney problems. Contact your healthcare provider promptly if these symptoms persist or you cannot keep fluids down. Getting support matters more than checking off a hydration goal.

DO: Eat slowly and give yourself smaller portions

Serve a smaller amount, take your time, and pause to notice how you feel. Give yourself permission to stop when comfortably full.

If nausea shows up, Lilly suggests smaller meals, stopping when full, avoiding fatty foods, and trying bland options such as toast, crackers, or rice. Talk with your clinician about nausea, too.

DON’T: Turn a smaller appetite into a competition to eat as little as possible.

Your body still needs nourishment. If eating enough becomes difficult, ask your prescriber or a registered dietitian for help.

DO: Make nutrition practical

Think about meals you can realistically prepare and tolerate. Options might include eggs, yogurt, fish, chicken, tofu, or beans alongside other foods that fit your nutrition plan.

You don’t need a picture-perfect plate at every meal. Keep a few manageable options available, and ask your dietitian about protein, fiber, and overall nutrition goals suited to you.

DON’T: Buy every supplement that appears on your feed.

Your shopping cart does not need to become a second pharmacy! 😂 Check with your pharmacist or clinician before adding supplements, laxatives, or remedies for side effects.

DO: Listen to your body—and act on what it tells you

A quick daily note can help you describe your experience:

  • What did I eat and drink?
  • How did my stomach feel?
  • What was my energy like?
  • What questions do I need to ask?

Nausea, constipation, diarrhea, and fatigue are among Zepbound’s common side effects, but symptoms that are severe or won’t go away deserve medical attention.

DON’T: Treat suffering as proof that it’s working.

Stop using Zepbound and call your healthcare provider right away for severe, persistent abdominal pain, which may spread to your back. Get emergency help for trouble breathing or swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

DO: Leave room for movement and rest

Choose movement appropriate for your abilities and care plan. That might mean a short walk, chair exercises, or another activity your clinician recommends.

Give yourself permission to adjust when you feel unwell. Rest belongs in your self-care routine, too.

DON’T: Use exercise as punishment for eating.

You deserve to eat, move, and rest without turning your day into a guilt trip.

DO: Know a few important starting safety details

Zepbound is not for people with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN 2. If you use oral birth control, the prescribing information advises switching to a non-oral method or adding a barrier method for four weeks after starting and four weeks after each dose increase. Stop Zepbound if pregnancy occurs and contact your prescriber. Review the full safety information with your care team.

DO: Celebrate the small wins

Prepared a meal? Asked your doctor a question? Made time to rest? Followed your care plan on a challenging day?

That counts. 💜

At Unwind and Unweight, there’s room to celebrate the quiet victories—the choices that might never appear in a progress photo but still deserve recognition.

DON’T: Let someone else’s timeline become your deadline.

You don’t owe the internet a dramatic weekly reveal. Give yourself credit for the habits you’re practicing and the care you’re taking.

Make room for your next chapter

Your first few weeks are a chance to learn, ask questions, and build a routine you can live with.

One balanced meal. One step forward. One promise to yourself kept.

What has your starting experience been like? Share a small win, a lesson, or a question in the comments—only what you feel comfortable sharing.

Keep visiting Unwind and Unweight, and join the conversation on Facebook for encouragement and honest connection. Share your experiences, respect everyone’s individual journey, and let your healthcare team guide medical decisions.

You deserve care and encouragement at every stage. Let’s give ourselves room to unwind, grow, and keep moving forward. 💜🌸
